The RS 3's engine has five cylinders, 2.5 liters of displacement and is supercharged by a turbocharger. It's 33 horsepower more powerful than the 2015 RS 3 engine and weighs 26 kilograms less thanks to a lighter alloy crankshaft. It has a double injection system, direct and indirect (at partial loads an additional indirect fuel injection is produced in order, among other things, to reduce the size of the exhaust particles).

It also has a variable valve timing system called the Audi valvelift for individual control of the two exhaust valves on each cylinder. There is more information on this engine, which is also featured in the Audi TT RS, in this technical article.
