The most obvious change from the M4 over the M3, the model it has replaced, is the engine. The naturally aspirated V8 has given way to a supercharged inline six-cylinder. It is not the first time that this model has a six-cylinder engine but it is the first time that it is supercharged.

In the M4, traction is on the rear wheels and the gearbox can be a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (M DKG).
